Before you hire

1. Open each contractor's official record with the Verify license link and make sure the business name and license number match the name on your quote.
2. Check that the license is active and doesn't expire before your project will be finished.
3. Check the license class. A specialty registration can be limited to one kind of work, so make sure it fits your job.
4. Get written quotes from more than one contractor for the same scope of work, materials and schedule.
5. Ask for proof of insurance and bonding, and ask who pulls the permits for the job.
6. Get a written contract that spells out the work, materials, price, payment schedule, start and finish dates, and warranty.
7. Pay as work is completed rather than all up front, and keep copies of the contract, receipts and any change orders.
