What Florida requires of contractors
- A person must be certified or registered to engage in the business of contracting in Florida. The statute says it does not affect local construction licensing ordinances, so check with your county or city as well. (Source: Florida Statutes 489.113: Qualifications for practice; restrictions)
- General, building and residential contractors certified after 1973 may not act or advertise as roofing contractors unless they are also certified or registered as roofing contractors. (Source: Florida Statutes 489.113: Qualifications for practice; restrictions)
- If a contractor takes more than 10% of the contract price as the first payment on residential work, they must apply for any needed permits within 30 days and start work within 90 days after the permits are issued, unless they have just cause or you agreed in writing to a longer period. (Source: Florida Statutes 489.126: Moneys received by contractors)
- A contract entered into by an unlicensed contractor can't be enforced by that contractor, and an unlicensed contractor has no lien or bond claim for the work. (Source: Florida Statutes 489.128: Contracts entered into by unlicensed contractors unenforceable)
